City Change #9

Brenda writes from Brooklyn, New York: "The changes I've experienced while living in this metropolis have been drastic. NYC has been Disneyfied. It has been corporatized and gentrified to the point where one needs a permit to gather in any meaningful way. The attitudes cater to the rich and any "undesirable" element is quickly rushed out of view. Rent is way up as are real estate prices in general. The opulence is a decoy, a simulacra and a mask for the suffering under its surface. Is this the throbbing heart of Imperialism and Empire? I believe so!"

Promotion

I've just made a new mini-chapbook, The Ground, in an edition of 50. It is red.

I'll send one to anyone who orders a copy of TOWN, The Bounty: Four Addresses, or How We Saved the City, and forwards me the receipt (along with a mailing address) at my gmail address, publiclycomplex.

I'll do this until I run out. I gave away a bunch as door prizes at the Hot Texts reading (thanks, Emily, Rachel, HR and Melissa!) and sold a few; if I run out by the time you feel like buying one of the full-length books, never fear, because it's part of a series of three! The other two will be The Pass and The Wave.

Wolf suit

"Isn't it weird that I'm sad?" I just said to the first student to come in for a conference. "It's not like I knew him."

People who didn't know him are going to be all over the internet today, writing about him. I read Maurice Sendak's books too young to even know the change he made in my imagination. That's probably true for a lot of people who are now adults and for a lot of people who are now kids -- we've always known about the Wild Things, about the Night Kitchen, about gusto, menace, strangeness and beauty.

When I think of him I think about the flyaway hair on the little boy he drew most often.

Reading at Books on the Square in Providence!

On Thursday, May 10th, at 7 pm, I'll be reading at Books on the Square (471 Angell St., Providence).
Get your copy of How We Saved the City and hear me try out some brand-new work.

Also, there are still a few days in which you can donate to Horse Less Press's Kickstarter Campaign for my and Daniela Olszewska's books. We have $2,470; we need $3,000. $20 gets you a copy of one book and $40 gets you a copy of both, plus some other treats, so it's a nice way to pre-order if you think you might want one.

Publicly Complex tonight!
